Maternal and Child Health
In addition to training thousands of Community Health Workers to provide maternal and child health education throughout the far reaches of the Amazon jungle, J&J and INMED have established 7 casas de espera, or maternity waiting homes, located in Ucayali and Puno. These regions historically have had the highest maternal mortality rates in the country. Maternity waiting homes are located near appropriately equipped and staffed heath care facilities. Pregnant women can stay in these homes, along with their family members, during the last stages of pregnancy or during a high-risk pregnancy to ensure that they are close to qualified obstetrical care when labor begins.
Our team has established several maternity waiting homes in indigenous communities, successfully handling several high-risk deliveries and postpartum health emergencies. For a personal account of how this program saves lives, read Hilda’s story.
