The Significance of Support: Rachel’s Story

Rachel, a teenager living in Los Angeles, was shocked to learn that she was pregnant at only 16.

“I didn’t really think this would ever happen to me,” she said. “At one point, I was considering abortion because I wasn’t ready and thought I couldn’t be a good mom to my son. After a lot of thought, I finally decided not to go along with the abortion.”

Rachel gave birth to her son, Christian, and started her new life as a teen mom. They moved in with her boyfriend and his family to begin their new life together.

She continued her education with the help of her boyfriend’s mother, but still struggled to balance the responsibilities of school and motherhood. Seeking advice, information, and support, Rachel turned to INMED’s MotherNet LA program, which aims to keep young parents and their children in safe and healthy environments. She joined when her son turned five months old, and eagerly took advantage of all the help and resources the program had to offer.

“My goals and accomplishments don’t end here… being a teen mom is not easy, but you can accomplish things if you set your mind to it.”

“Month after month, we spoke about different topics that taught me to be a good mom and keep my son healthy,” she said. “I am now 19 years old and have been in the program for two years. I am matured and also have managed to graduate from high school and continue my education to earn my diploma as a medical assistant.”

Inspired by her success in the program, Rachel has big plans for the future.

“My goals and accomplishments don’t end here,” she said. “There’s just so much to do and learn. I know being a teen mom is not easy, but you can accomplish things if you set your mind to it.”
